How to Calculate Excess Weight

Being overweight can cause problems ranging from low self-esteem, diabetes, and heart disease. Being overweight can reduce your life span. Before starting a weight loss program, you should know how many kilograms you need to lose.

Excess weight is the difference between your actual weight and your ideal body weight. Ideal weight is a term used to define a healthy weight based on your body size, taking gender into account. Knowing your ideal weight will keep you motivated to continue with a diet program and will set a benchmark for successful weight loss in a healthy way.

If you are a woman, calculate your ideal body weight, with the following formula, called the Hamwi formula: [(your height in centimeters – 152.4) / 2.54] x 2.27 + 45.4. For example, if your height is 165 centimeters, your ideal body weight formula would look like this: [(165-152.4) / 2.54] x 2.27 + 45.4. Your ideal weight would be 56.6 kg.

If you are a man, calculate your ideal body weight with the following formula, called the Hamwi formula: [(your height in centimeters – 152.4) / 2.54] x 2.7 + 48.124. For example, if your height is 179 centimeters, your ideal body weight formula would look like this: [(179-152.4) / 2.54] x 2.7 + 48.124. Your ideal body weight would be 76.4 kg.

Calculate excess weight by subtracting your ideal body weight, previously calculated, from your current weight. Use the examples above, if you are a woman and currently weigh 60 kg, your excess weight is 3.4 kg. If you are a man, you weigh 180 kg, your excess weight is 3.6 kg.
